The Ledbetter bridge dropped again after the rain last night. Now you can watch the boats through the openings between the spans. The views from the Ledbetter side shows how far the piers are leaning.
I thought no barges were suppose to be going under that side. If u look at the picture u can see a barge going under it, looks like its on the side that's falling.
no the boat is one span out from that the coast guard wood not let anyone go under that span and if you did go under that span you would hit the docks just below the bridge. I know this because im a towboat pilot on that river.
These photos are both amazing and disturbing. I hope this is a wake-up call for other bridges in this area that are also in need of repair or needing to be replaced. I believe we dodged a huge bullet with the new bridge being built and opened in time before this became such a serious issue.
I realize its been a year since the bridge opened. To me that's still too close to call.. The next bridge needing attention is the Smithland bridge... These pics bring tears my eyes...
I know for a fact that at least 20 years ago the State performed an investigation on it. That was when it was brought to their attention from peoples worried complaints I believe that's when they actually repaved it instead of patching. Remember? It felt like riding a very rough horse.lol. Anyhow, it was determined BY THE STATE that this was absolutely THE most dangerous bridge in the entire state with Smithlands. And this was determined that long ago!!! It should NOT HAVE taken 20 yrs to do this. The job WAS BID ON back then too. So it's been in the works for a couple of decades at least. When they began, it was a huge problem with the big pylons sinking back down. Glad that they restricted heavy loads. Must've been really bad to pay law enforcement overtime to monitor it 24/7. But I'm sure that the numerous speeding tickets helped some. "

I would almost imagine the guard rails are what has kept it from falling down totally, from the looks of it.
